Here we want you to give a general idea of what a Cover letter is. Cover letter is an accompanying document of a resume. Whenever you send out a resume, it must come with a superb quality Cover Letter to give your future employer a favorable and lasting impression about you. First the reader will see your Cover Letter and that is why you must get him interested in you from the first lines of your letter. Otherwise, he/she won’t get around to reading your resume.

Here we list some of the most significant rules that will help you to make an effective Cover Letter.

  1. First and foremost - cover letter should contain no spelling or grammar mistakes.
  2. Address the letter directly to the person who is hiring you. If you choose to send it to the personnel department, it will be considered for much longer or it can be lost in piles of other papers.
  3. State your reason for writing. Don’t ramble, but be specific. Here there are two options: either you are inquiring whether any positions are available currently or indicate which position you are applying for. With the last option identify the source of information.
  4. Induce your future employer to read the attached resume.
  5. Remember, that employers seek for someone who will add up new ideas, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm to their company. Show in your cover letter that you are the person. Write the letter in your natural way, don’t sound too pompous.
  6. Find out more about the company and include the basic information about it into your letter. It will give the employer an idea that you are very interested in the position. Besides he/she will be flattered that among all the rest you have chosen their company.
  7. Use key words and phrases to target your cover letter. If you apply for the position in the advert, include their requirements and type them in BOLD.
  8. Draw the reader’s attention to the most relevant and successful points of your background. Illustrate the facts with examples.
  9. Give any information that is not reflected in your resume, but is specifically indicated in the advertisement. (e.g. availability date, attached samples of your work)
  10. Thank them for their consideration.
  11. Write what you are going to do to follow up. Don’t finish your cover letter with just saying “I am looking forward to hearing from you soon”. Take the initiative to proceed; completing your cover letter with something like, “I will contact you in a week to provide any additional information about myself, if necessary”.
